Kindergarten Phonics Vowel-Team Boat Race

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: reading common vowel teams in one-syllable words

1

Read rain and train. Put them in the ai boat.

2

Read seed and feet. Underline ee, then add them to its boat.

3

Read boat and road. Sort them under oa.

4

Read leaf and sea. Sort them under ea.

5

Choose rain, feet, road, or leaf. Draw what one word means.

6

Write one extra word for any boat, then read all words in that boat smoothly.

Grown-up note: Ask your learner to explain one answer in their own words.

How to teach this page

  1. Step 1Introduce only the four sound teams printed on the page; do not generalize beyond them yet.
  2. Step 2Have the child point to the vowel team before reading each word.
  3. Step 3Treat any unfamiliar word as a decoding opportunity, then briefly explain its meaning.
