Kindergarten Phonics Sound-Blending Road

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: blending individual phonemes into simple words

1

Touch /m/ /a/ /t/. Slide and write mat.

2

Touch /s/ /i/ /t/. Blend, then circle the middle sound.

3

Touch /r/ /u/ /n/. Blend and draw what the word means.

4

Touch /f/ /o/ /x/. Blend, then write the first and last letters.

5

An adult says /h/ /e/ /n/. Blend it and write the word.

6

Choose one word from the page. Say its sounds slowly, then blend it for an adult.

Grown-up note: Ask your learner to explain one answer in their own words.

How to teach this page

  1. Step 1Keep the sounds close together rather than pausing between them.
  2. Step 2Model one continuous finger sweep under the sounds before the child tries.
  3. Step 3If blending stalls, say the first two sounds together, then add the last sound.
