Kindergarten Phonics Letter-Sound Picture Sort

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: matching beginning sounds to letter spellings

1

Say sun. Write it under s and underline the first letter.

2

Say map. Write it under m and draw a quick map clue.

3

Say fish. Write it under f and stretch the first sound.

4

Sort top, tub, and tent under t. What sound do they share?

5

Choose b, c, or d for the picture word dog. Write the complete word.

6

Draw an object for one letter on the page and label its beginning sound.

Grown-up note: Ask your learner to explain one answer in their own words.

How to teach this page

  1. Step 1Name each picture naturally and let the child repeat it before choosing a letter.
  2. Step 2Contrast only two possible letters if a child is unsure, then say both sounds aloud.
  3. Step 3Ask the child to trace the first letter while repeating its sound, not its letter name alone.
