Kindergarten Phonics R-Controlled Sound Map

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: recognizing ar, er, ir, or, and ur vowel-r patterns

1

Read car and star. Underline ar and put them on the ar map.

2

Read fern and herd. Circle er in each word.

3

Read bird and shirt. Sort them under ir.

4

Read fork and horn. Write the shared vowel-r pattern.

5

Read turn and curl. Put them under ur, then draw one word.

6

Choose two words from different maps. Read them to an adult and tell which pattern each has.

Grown-up note: Ask your learner to explain one answer in their own words.

For the grown-up

How to teach this page

  1. Step 1Present r-controlled vowels as a new spelling pattern, not as a rule the child must memorize at once.
  2. Step 2Compare two words within one group before moving to another group.
  3. Step 3Read the word aloud after the child identifies the pattern so recognition stays connected to pronunciation.
