1st Grade Reading Response: Beginning, Middle, End Story Map

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: retelling key events in sequence

1

Write the story title or draw a clue from its cover.

2

What happened at the beginning? Draw it, then label it with one or two words.

3

What important event happened in the middle?

4

What happened at the end?

5

Number your three events 1, 2, and 3. Do they stay in story order?

6

Tell an adult the story using First, Next, and Last. Add one detail you forgot to write.

Grown-up guide
  1. Choose a short read-aloud or an independently read text with a clear event sequence.
  2. Invite drawing first; help the child add a word or dictated label only after the event is clear.
  3. Ask 'What happened next?' rather than correcting the retell immediately, then reread one page together if needed.
