1st Grade Reading Response: Character Feelings and Clues

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: describing a character's feelings with story evidence

1

Write the character's name or draw the character.

2

Circle or write one feeling word: happy, worried, proud, angry, surprised, or another word.

3

What did the character say, do, or have happen that gives you that clue?

4

Draw the story moment that matches the feeling.

5

Finish the sentence: 'I think ___ feels ___ because ___. '

6

Choose a later part of the book. Did the feeling stay the same or change? Show the new clue.

Grown-up guide
  1. Read the feeling-word choices aloud, and accept a child-generated feeling word when it fits.
  2. Turn back to the page with the clue so evidence means a visible part of the text or illustration, not a guess.
  3. Model one oral response with 'because' before the child writes or dictates their own.
