How Many More, How Many Fewer?

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: using subtraction to compare two groups

1

Mira has 14 stickers and Ben has 9. How many more does Mira have?

2

Draw 11 marks and 7 marks in two rows. Pair them. How many are unpaired?

3

A red tower has 16 cubes and a blue tower has 12. How many fewer cubes are in the blue tower?

4

Write both a 'more' sentence and a 'fewer' sentence about 15 and 10.

5

Sam says nothing was taken away, so subtraction cannot compare 13 and 8. Show how subtraction helps.

6

Create two groups with a difference of 4 and no more than 20 in either group. Write a comparison.

Grown-up guide
  1. Line up paired objects to make the extra part visible.
  2. Read the comparison both ways using more and fewer.
  3. Ask the child to label which group is larger before calculating.
