Record How a Shadow Changes

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: comparing shadows while changing light direction

1

Place a safe object on paper. With an adult, shine a flashlight from one side and trace its shadow.

2

Mark where the flashlight was held for the first shadow.

3

Move the flashlight to the other side. Trace the new shadow in a different pencil pattern.

4

Compare the direction of the two shadows.

5

Keep the flashlight on one side but move it closer. Record what changes.

6

Write one observation and one question about shadows.

Grown-up guide
  1. Use a flashlight and never shine it into eyes.
  2. Keep the object still while changing light position.
  3. Separate observations about direction from observations about size.
