Find a Line of Symmetry by Folding

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: checking reflection symmetry with matching halves

1

Draw and cut a nonsquare rectangle with adult help. Fold it so its short sides meet. Mark the fold.

2

Fold it so its long sides meet. Mark the second fold.

3

Does each fold make both halves match? Describe how you checked.

4

Try a corner-to-opposite-corner fold on the nonsquare rectangle. Do the boundaries match?

5

Repeat the diagonal fold with a square. What changes?

6

Write a rule for checking whether a fold marks a line of symmetry.

Grown-up guide
  1. Prepare visibly nonsquare rectangles to make the contrast clear.
  2. Use adult help and blunt scissors.
  3. Check matching boundaries instead of assuming any dividing line is symmetric.
