Follow Position Words on a Simple Map

Name:
Date:

Today I am practising: using relative position words to describe a layout

1

Draw a circle in the middle of your answer space. Draw a square to its left.

2

Draw a triangle to the right of the circle.

3

Draw a star above the circle and a small dot below it.

4

Which shape is between the square and triangle?

5

Write directions that would help an adult recreate your map.

6

Turn the paper halfway around. Explain why left and right directions now need a stated viewpoint.

Grown-up guide
  1. Agree that directions use the child's view with the paper upright.
  2. Allow an adult to draw the initial shapes if needed.
  3. Have a partner follow the directions as a check of clarity.
