Date:

Today I am practising: segmenting short-i CVC words into three phonemes

1

Say pig slowly. Write /p/ /i/ /g/ in three boxes.

2

Segment fin and mark the middle sound with a star.

3

Segment sit, then blend the three sounds back together.

4

Write the sounds you hear in lid.

5

Change the first sound in fin to /p/. Write the new word.

6

Draw one short-i word and label it without looking back.

Grown-up note: Ask your learner to explain one answer in their own words.

For the grown-up

How to teach this page

  1. Step 1Model one word with counters before the child writes letters.
  2. Step 2Accept the sound first; then prompt for the letter that spells it.
  3. Step 3Ask the child to sweep a finger under the boxes to blend.
